Fire Safety - Safe and Well Checks
Locally, there have also been recent considerations for a SAR in regards to adults at risk who
have died in house fires.
Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) have recently flagged a concerning rise in fire
deaths across the North East. Many of these involved one or more of the following themes:
• Older, vulnerable people with health conditions that made mobility restricted
• Smoking
• Use of emollients (skin creams that can be highly flammable)
It has also been established that risk factors which increase the vulnerability of an individual to
fire are closely aligned to those which affect a person's health and wellbeing for example, age,
mobility, alcohol, mental health and Living Alone.
TWFRS have some excellent fire safety tips on their website: https://www.twfire.gov.uk/safetyadvice/home/prevent/
TWFRS also offer Safe and Well checks (formerly home safety checks). The Safe and Well
Check aims to identify all fire and lifestyle associated hazards, in order to reduce the risk of
having a fire or an accident in the home.
