What to do if you are concerned about an
adult at risk
• Please act promptly; it can be very difficult to investigate concerns if there is a delay as
some signs of abuse can disappear quite quickly.
• Make an immediate evaluation of the risks and take steps to ensure nobody is in danger
• Preserve evidence and secure the scene (e.g. locking a door). There is also further
information on the Trust Safeguarding Intranet page regarding forensic medical
assessments and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC).
• Speak to your line manager/department manager or colleague as soon as possible and
ensure the adult at risk is safe.
• Call 999 if necessary
• Keep yourself and others safe
• Contact the safeguarding adult team if further advice or support is required.
• Never make decisions in isolation.
REMEMBER
• Action must be taken to safeguard any connected child/ unborn if it is believed that they
may also be suffering from abuse or neglect.
• Staff should follow safeguarding children procedures.
